Opportunity gets more freedom as it grows older

The rovers have always had limited autonomy, but to get around obstacles that required more than a few meters of advanced planning, they needed help from home. An algorithm designed at CMU is now being tested on Opportunity to see if the ability to think farther ahead will give it more freedom and allow it to work more efficiently. If the tests are successful, the new software will become standard issue for later rovers.
